All trailers that are to be registered to carry a Gross Vehicle Mass of more than 750kg require brakes. Gross Vehicle Mass or GVM is the combine weight of the trailer and its load.

Although the design capacity of a trailer may be greater than 750kg GVM; without brakes a trailer can be registed to a maximum of 750kg GVM.

All tandem trailers are standard with braking systems. Trailers up to 2000kg GVM are fitted with mechanical override disc brakes and trailers over 2000kg GVM are fitted with electric brakes on all axles plus a safety break-away system.
